Losing a loved one is hard, no matter how prepared you think you are for it. We recently said our forever goodbye’s to our dog, Kashiko. For thirteen years he was best-friend, companion, and child to my husband. For the nearly seven years I knew him, he was The Boss. Fortunately for me he wasn’t a hard taskmaster, and as a family we shared many good times, and many tasty chickens.
I’ve been hiding out, licking my wounds, but it’s time to embrace healing; I know of no better way to lift my spirits than to smell perfumes with two of my best friends: Mr. H and the Reverend Anderson. The three of us have a sniff-date at the Perfume House in Portland today!
The Perfume House is something of a sacred spot. Here are some of our “firsts”:
TPH is where the perfumista was born inside my mother, not quite a year ago.
TPH is the first place Mr. H and the Reverend were assaulted with multiple fragrances and subsequent demands for feedback…
TPH is the place where I first (stupidly) attempted to smell an entire fragrance line in one trip. I have since repeated this error on numerous occasions (you can’t learn me!).
We go armed with a Sniff-List, so that we can stay on track without trying to cover too much ground. Eleven perfumes on the Sniff-List:
1. Frapin 1270
2. Serge Lutens Muscs Koublai Khan
3. L’Artisan Coeur de Vétiver Sacré
4. Creed Original Santal
5. Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Figue – Iris
6. Guerlain Vol de Nuit
7. Lolita Lempicka (original)
8. Serge Lutens Jeux de Peau (even though I have a sample, I want to spray it)
9. Montale Sandalsilver
10. Chanel Égoïste
11. Chanel Antaeus
So good to see you back in the saddle, dear Dee!
Oh, please can I come? It woulf be so grear to go with you! Lovely list! I am sure you will like the Frapin and Lempicka!
I wish it would be November already!!!! 🙂
I am looking forward to your report!
It’s good to be back in the saddle—I feel alive again!
We would be like diabetics in the candy shop!
They didn’t have any Frapin—I misremembered 😦 but LL was pretty good; I actually liked the homme version better! I think I would like to add a small decant to my collection, but a full bottle did not call to me 🙂
Hope you enjoy the report!
i loved that guy. it was a sad day for me when i heard the news. he was not only the handsomest canine but also the best dog in the world. i felt like every visit to see you and matt was also a visit to see him. he will be sorely missed.
can’t wait to see you two, well, actually, waiting to see you two is exactly what i am doing at this moment…
He was the best! We were very lucky to have him in our family 🙂
Ah, Dee, I’m so happy to have you back and so, so sorry for your loss. Can I come, too? Just for those Frapins? After spending a day with Spiritueuse Double Vanille (Wow. Just – wow. Fourtyeen hours and still thrumming. Thank you, B!), I’m thinking…boozy. Yes. Please.
Sometimes, I daydream of what would ever happen if we all got together for real and went to Perfume House, or somewhere similar. Havoc! You think? 😉 Fun? You bet!
So there are the thoughts I’ll send you way instead and say again: I’m so, so happy to see you’re back! 🙂
Thank you dear T., your kind words and thoughtful email have meant a lot to me during this time! I feel very supported surrounded by your kind words!
SDV layered with A*Men Pure Havane got me through a couple hard days last week. A little booze can be a really good thing 😉
Oh, I have that dream. Someday… we’ll paint the town oakmoss.
LOL! I crack myself up.
Forgive my hasty typo! It should have been…fourteen! 😉
Haha, I didn’t even notice it until you pointed it out! I’m the queen of typos, and I hearby anoint you priestess of. 😉
I lost my dear kitty Maggie last August, and am far from being back to normal. She was diagnosed with cancer last February, so I did get 6 more months with her. I just don’t think any amount of time could have been enough. So, I sympathize with you completely, and I hope your trip to The Perfume House with friends provided respite and healing for you. 🙂
Carrie, I’m so sorry for your loss of Maggie. I don’t think we’ll ever be the way we were before. Animals change us, the way good friends do, and I think they leave a part of themselves with us. There’s a place in my heart that still grieves for Merlin, a cat I had in grade-school, and I’m glad that there’s still pain—it reminds me to appreciate the time I have with the ones who are still with me.
Cho has been getting really spoiled lately.
Dee, I’m sorry to hear about the loss of your dog.
That’s quite a sniff list you have. I can’t imagine trying all of those at one go! Anyway, I hope you have fun on your excursion.
Thank you Ellen 🙂
I always over-do it. It’s a personality flaw!
so the skanky musk that you sprayed on my right arm total lost that ‘cat’s ass’ undertone after a couple of hours. as i am preparing for bed it is left smelling spicy, a little dirty with a tiny sweet floral note hiding under the earth.
the one on my left was giving me a foul headache so it got washed off as soon as i walked in the door.
it was great seeing you both today!!!
